Synopsis

In the desert of Arizona thousands of people have flocked to escape the toxins of urban life. They are suffering from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) and even in the desert they show symptoms of chronic fatigue, migraine, loss of memory and respiratory problems. For these people the American Dream has turned into a nightmare. Desperate to shut themselves off from chemicals, they have ostracized themselves from society. Toxic is a documentary on people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS). Unable to tolerate even the smallest amount of chemicals, such as deodorant, ink, perfume, soap, victims of MCS seek refuge in the desert of Arizona, USA. Isolated from society they try to convince friends, relatives and neighbours that they suffer from a life threathening illness. But nobody seems to understand or is prepared to listen. The extremities of the situation are to most people absurd. More often than not the mental stability of the victim is disputed. Both parties are frustrated in their attempts to come to terms with their seperate realities and all communication comes to a grinding halt. The people in this documentary have given up on communicating. Both parties are living seperate lives. This documentary won’t give you clear answers, it does show that watching people really communicate can be a very rare sight.
